Super Senior Heart Smoothie

Today I wanted to share with you my morning routine which most days consists of a healthy smoothie. I like to call it my super senior heart smoothie. Now this is not a meal replacement. You should always have a balanced meal plan including plenty of fruits and vegetables.
I have a hard time keeping weight on and use this smoothie not only to add some protein and good fat to my diet but also some heart friendly supplementation. It is very important for seniors to take care of your heart. Certainly exercise is the best thing, but also a good diet along with beneficial heart helpful supplements is important too.

I have looked at the store-bought shakes for seniors and really feel it is better to make your own at home. They are fresher and can be modified to your particular lifestyle and health conditions.

Ok, I’m getting hungry. Let’s get started.
Here are the ingredients.
First I start with 1/3 cup coconut milk from a can. This adds some taste and some calories.
Then I add 3/4 cup of Almond or other milk alternative.
One scoop of protein powder, I like Whey protein better than soy protein.
One banana
2 table spoons of peanut butter, natural kind of course.
1/2 cup frozen fruit, let’s try frozen blueberries today. You can use fresh fruit if you like. I prefer frozen just to add a chill the smoothie.
Finally, some heart healthy supplements. I don’t like swallowing pills so I just crush them and add some into the smoothie. Here are the supplements.

Fish oil for my omega 3s for heart and brain health.
Amino acid Taurine to help reduce inflammation and arterial thickening
Niacin to raise hdl the good cholesterol
CoQ10 an antioxidant to protect the heart
Magnesium for muscle and nerve function
Vit D3 and
Vitamin K for protecting your blood vessels from calcification
Vitamin C to slow down the progression of hardening of the arteries
Good bacteria for intestinal health
and an adult multivitamin to support your overall health”

Now we will blend it all up for a few minutes.
And we have a nutritional heart healthy smoothie that actually tastes good, and is good for you.

Remember that as we age, it becomes more and more important to make sure we are getting all the right nutrients to maintain a healthy body and mind. If you have any doubt about your diet, try adding a healthy smoothie to your day. I know I feel great after my smoothie and just picture in my mind all those nutrients and supplements making their way all over my body, helping my heart, brain, arteries, liver, intestines and bones. Give it a try. Until next time, cheers.
