One of the Best All-Around Balance Exercise For Seniors


I get asked all the time about balance exercises. Balance has always been the most popular subject on my site, and also the most searched area of interest. Seniors tend to not worry about balance at all until they run into a situation that requires balance. For example, let’s say you just got up in the morning, pulled off your covers and sat up at the edge of the bed. Usually one of the first things we do is get dressed. For men this involves putting on pants, and women also either putting on pants or a dress. I have had many senior patients injured by falling while dressing in the morning or before going to bed.

For this balance exercise for seniors, simply place two objects on the floor about 3 to 4 feet apart. Begin by walking around the objects in a figure of 8 pattern. Try to walk slowly at first, try not to cross your feet over each other. That may increase your risk of tripping. Look up if you can instead of always looking down. Just make sure the objects you place on the floor are not something you can easily trip on. Usually something soft like a slipper or large sponge will do. Try 10 laps to start all the way around. If you get dizzy, stop and rest, get some water and start again when you are feeling better.
