Exercise For Spinal Fusion

by Lucille
(Punta Gorda FL)

I had a spinal fusion 3 years ago. I also went to P.T. right after it and again later on. The doctor feels that bone spurs are causing the pain and has started giving me epidurals to lesson the pain.

What exercises do you recommend for me.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

May 02, 2011 How to strengthen your back
by: Douglas Schrift

When we exercise with a medical condition, it is important to check with your doctor on any contraindications for your personal situation. Inform him or her that you will be doing back strengthening exercises and stretching exercises.

Before starting back exercises, try warming up the low back with a heating pad. Place the heating pad on a couch or bed, and cover with a folded towel to dissipate the heat. Then lie with your low back over the pad, while elevating your feet and legs on a stack of cushions. Heat for 20 to 30 minutes. Then begin exercising.

My favorite back exercise is the simple bridging exercise that you will find on our site. The web address is https://eldergym.com/lower-back-pain-exercises.html. This exercise will go a long way to strengthen and stabilize your low back and hips. It is simple to perform and will also make it easier to move around in your bed.

Then stretch your back and legs with a hamstring stretching exercise. The web address is https://eldergym.com/hamstring-stretching.html. This is a great stretch for your low back. It is especially more effective after warming up your back with the heating pad.

Make sure to stretch each side three times for 30 seconds. Try not to bounce when stretching, simply lean forward and feel the stretch. Remember, stretching should feel good!
