Exercise is the best tool we have to stay independent and avoid disability as we age. This DVD program is geared for seniors to improve overall balance and stability. This is a great option for inactive seniors who want to become stronger and more balanced, but need something simple, easy, and not time consuming.
Doug Schrift PT, Eldergym®
I Had NO Experience with Exercise And Now I feel Stronger and more balanced after just 4 weeks…
As a Physical Therapist I treat many seniors with decreasing balance as they age. This can lead to falls, and further injury. Good balance, posture and stability, is vital to maintain your independence and avoid disability.
I also receive many requests every week asking for advice on just what to do with parents who are unsteady, losing their balance, growing weaker by the day, losing motivation, and becoming depressed due to their situation.[/text_block]
These patients are in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s. This senior balance program was designed with these seniors in mind. There is no dancing or difficult steps to follow. Just simple exercises working on increasing balance, stability, posture, leg strength, arm and back strength, and joint flexibility.

My mother is 92 and has dementia. She uses the exercise DVD as her physical activity as she doesn’t get around much anymore. After finishing one 30 minute DVD, she asked if there were anymore to do.

Are your DVD’s closed captioned?
Yes, this balance DVD set is closed captioned for the hearing impaired. Simply select English from your remote control unit to display the captioning.
Why are your DVD’s only 30 minutes long?
When I instruct a senior exercise class in person, they will run about 50 to 60 minutes. This is mostly because of the time, effort, and money involved in attending a formal exercise class. At home, 30 minutes is more appropriate. Not too long, and not too short. You can get a fine workout in 30 minutes. It allows you to plan your day much better. Each DVD has just the right amount of stretching and strengthening. When I made these DVDs, I realized seniors would watch them regularly. For this reason, I avoid excess conversation and just get right to work. I planned every exercise, so that you would get a well-rounded routine, all in 30 minutes.
How do I use the DVD program?
The Eldergym® Balance Program for Seniors includes 3 DVDs. Simply exercise along with each DVD once a week. For example, watch DVD 1 on Monday, DVD 2 on Wednesday, and DVD 3 on Friday. The DVDs are 30 minutes long which makes them easy to schedule into your day. To really challenge and improve your balance, you can pause the DVD after a balance exercise in order to repeat it on your own a few times extra.
Should I ask my Doctor about starting an exercise program?
Yes. When you start a new exercise program or increase your activity level, talk with your doctor about any limitation you may have.

If your country is not on the list, email me at the contact page and I will tell you if it is possible and what the cost estimate will be.

I don’t live in the USA or Canada. Will your DVDs work in my player?
If an American made movie dvd (made for the American and Canadian market) displays on your TV, then the dvd’s will work. If they don’t display you will need to get help to program your player and TV to display movies for the American market. The DVDs are locally produced in NTSC format and DO NOT have a regional security code like movies. USA and Canada TV’s need NTSC formatted signals for display. Outside the USA and Canada TV’s need PAL formatted signals. Most modern DVD players will play NTSC DVDs and PAL formatted dvd’s, and can convert NTSC format to PAL format for a PAL TV, and that includes many of the small, portable players. So will most newish TV sets,(2000+) though you may have to call up the menu system and select an NTSC option. Older TV’s outside the USA and Canada must have PAL formatted input, which needs to be converted by the dvd player or converter box from NTSC to PAL.
What do I need to exercise along with these DVDs?
This balance program is made more fun, interesting and effective by the use of props. I chose items that most seniors would have around the home already. You will need a kitchen chair, hand weights ( start with 2 pounds for women and 3 pounds for men), a bath towel, ankle weights ( optional for more of a challenge ), a small throw pillow, yardstick or ruler, small flashlight, tennis ball, bandana, 3 plastic cups, and 2 spoons.
Who is this Balance program made for?
This balance program is made for the senior who has age-related balance loss. If you have vertigo, Meniere’s Disease, or medication related dizziness, check with your doctor. If you need a walker during the day, you will not be able to perform these exercises. If you feel you may fall, have a family member assist. If you use a cane, you may be able to perform most of the exercises by holding on to a chair. The important thing is to be safe. Keep the chair nearby or have a family member help you perform the exercises.
What do I need to wear when exercising along with this program?
I recommend using loose fitting clothing that is comfortable. Smooth bottom shoes so as not to trip on carpet.
I want to send this program to my parents. What should I do?
This is a great program for your parents. First make sure they have an armless kitchen chair, a small hand weight of 2 or 3 pounds, a small throw pillow and bath towel, and the other household items mentioned earlier. If you live nearby, I recommend exercising along with them the first time to make sure they are able to safely perform the exercises. Many exercises are performed in the seated position, but some balance exercises do require standing and walking. If you are worried about them falling, better to have a family member present just in case.
